The Bafi Refuge (also spelt Mpafi) which is the start point of Orienteering competionon, belongs to the Greek Mountaineering Club, E.O.S. Athens founded in 1928 in the Mount Parnitha National Park, at an altitude of 1160m, roughly 2.5 km from Mont Parness, inside the national park. Ιn April 1937 the refuge's foundation stone was laid. The first part was completed in autumn of 1939 with money that was collected mainly by the members of the Mountaineering Club, but also other affiliated associations. Paths begin from the shelter leaving in all directions, which can offer small and easy walks of half and one hour or long and difficult walks for the fitter.

 

Description

It is located only one hour away from the center of Athens, to the beautiful and unknown for many, mount Parnitha you can go and breathe fresh air, escape the hustle and bustle of the city and take a break from the daily routine. You may walk, run, play or take photos. You can also stop off at the shelter named “Mpafi” to relax and enjoy your morning coffee, a meal or just the wonderful view. It is located in the heart of the mountain. It is an organized and appropriate place to accept visitors of every age who can take the opportunity to unwind in nature and discover the unique fir forest of Attica across the National Park of mount Parnes.

Access

Access to the refuge is from the street that goes up Parnitha to the casino “Mont Parness”, or from a marked path that begins from the car park of the cable car and via the ravine of Choynis, leading to the shelter. In addition, Bathis Square buses of line 714 of OASA leave for the Casino of Parnitha.

Access by car:  The access to the refuge is possible either by car along the main road that goes up mount Parnitha towards the casino “Mont Parnes” (red – white line), or on foot along the marked path (yellow – spaced black line) that starts from the parking lot of the cable car  and through the gorge of Hounis leads to the Mpafi refuge.

After Attiki Odos (for those coming from the direction of Athens), at the next exit (PARNITHA-METAMORFOSIS-ACHARNE), exit right in order to go up the bridge. At the traffic lights turn left and follow the sign to Mount Parnitha. Continue straight ahead without turning anywhere for 10 kilometres (10-15 mins depending on traffic). You will pass all the local taverns and you will arrive at the parking area of the cable car. Follow the map. After about 16 km (20’-25’) you will arrive at the refuge.
